Do you need a licence for an electric scooter in Tangier?

This is the question we get most often, usually the evening before someone arrives. Short answer: no, our electric scooters are rented without a licence. You need to be 18 and to show an ID. What follows is what we ask for at handover, and nothing else.

What to bring

• 18 years old.
• An ID — passport or identity card. We look at it, we do not keep it.
• 1,000 DH in cash for the deposit.
• The rental itself, also in cash.

The deposit comes back when the scooter does. It is not a charge: it is the same money leaving with you again. Payment is in cash at handover; card payment has been announced but is not running yet, so bring dirhams.

What comes with the scooter

A helmet, with every scooter, at no extra cost. The scooter is charged to 100 % when we hand it over, with a range of about 60 km — enough for any ride on this blog and back again. Charging is from a normal socket and takes 4 to 5 hours, so plug it in at the hotel overnight rather than between two visits.

The first half hour

If you have never ridden one of these, do not start in the medina. Do the Corniche first: 2.2 km from the medina, ten minutes, a flat wide avenue along the bay. Ten minutes is enough to learn how the scooter pulls away and, more to the point, how it stops.

The medina itself is for walking. The lanes of the Kasbah climb, they are cobbled, and they regularly end in a staircase. Park at the Grand Socco and go up on foot: four minutes of riding, then your legs.

Two up

The scooters have two seats. One helmet comes with each scooter — if you are riding two up, tell us when you book so we can plan for it. With two people the battery drops a little faster than the figures we quote, especially on the climbs towards Rmilat and Cap Spartel.

The handover

We bring the scooter to where you are in Tangier — a hotel, an apartment, one of the usual delivery points such as the Grand Socco, Marina Bay, Malabata or Marjane — or you come by the shop on Place des Nations. There we look at the ID, take the deposit, hand you the helmet and show you the controls before you ride off. It comes back to the same place at the agreed time.

What we do not do

• No card payment for now, cash only.
• No handover outside Tangier: we deliver inside the city, or you come by the shop.
• No choice of colour: the scooters are black or grey and you get the one that is free.
